Update From Oz

Felice has been back in Australia since late spring and recently (ok it was a while ago now) sent me this update:

Snow down under!

Today my new Madshus hypersonic skating skis that I got from Bend Bike and Sport got their first taste of Aussie snow with some incredible crust cruising on the high plains at Falls Creek.  The start of the season has seen some spectacular snow falls in the Australian alpine regions.  Over the past week, the storms delivered over half a metre of snow and gale force winds.  So now there is an impressive base of over 1m (40 inches for you guys), which is a rare occurrence for this time of the season, and pretty much guarantees some great skiing until September.  Woohoo! Summer Ski Training Makes Boring Blogging

Posted by marshall in Latest News

Week 12 So Far

Sometimes cross-country ski training isn’t really all that exciting to read about.  Sure, we occaisionally have camps where we find some new locations to rollerski or have incredible views.  And we’ll throw in a random dryland race to gauge our fitness a bit.  But to really become a great skier requires days and days of fairly similar training. Week 11 Training and Goal Hours for the Year

Posted by marshall in Latest News

Sunday’s workout was a frustrating one due mostly to my lack of planning.  I broke a pole early in the week and then when I went to Bend Bike n Sport to cut an old shaft, I forgot that I had given my key to Allen, one of the new owners of the shop so I couldn’t get in (after hours).  So I didn’t want to skate roll since one pole was about 10cm longer than the other.  But I also had left my classic rollerski stuff in Matt Lieto’s car after rollerskiing up McKenzie Pass ahead of the Cascade Classic Cycling race, where I then volunteered by setting up the finish.  So I couldn’t classic ski either.  Thus, I was forced to go out on poles of different lengths to get my workout in.  Not ideal.  And easily avoidable if I’d planned ahead.

Here’s last week’s training.  You’ll have to jump forward on the top to “week 3″ of the month since it will automatically just open to week one.  Usually the dates are at the top so you should be able to figure it out.

Also here is my weekly breakdown of training for the year on google docs.  This is just a general breakdown that makes sure my training is periodized thru the year. I try to follow the hours fairly closely in the summer and fall but then come race season, I don’t adhere nearly as well since the race calendar tends to dictate

Euro Trip Special

Posted by Brayto in Latest News

As you may recall our boy Zach is across the other side of the US, then across the pond, getting his second European adventure in the last 4 months. Pretty solid really. But, since he went over there, he’s mostly been AWOL. Word on the street, or on email at least, is that his internet access in Deutschland is not all that sweet. Really, all we know is that he’s been roller skiing a 5k loop, going through books like me on an airplane. (more…)

Here’s my log for this week so far  Marshall’s Log

Also I was playing around with Google Maps Pedometer and calculated/tracked our route from our long rollerski the other day.  Ended up almost 41 miles.  Here’s that route: Rollerski Route

A Midsummer’s Day Rollerski.

Brayton and i went for a longish one this morning.  Just about 3:45 and while it is now approaching 90 degrees, it stayed fairly pleasant for most of the ski.  It was hot, sure, but not oppresive and we got started early enough that it wasn’t really too bad.  I started to get hungry at just under 3 hours and when we hit the steepest climb of the day at 3:20, my legs were tired.  So it was a good ski.  Starting to feel long for the last half hour or so but not agonzing, which I think is about right for a long OD.
